Flexibility
Last week we talked about choices and a few tips on how to do that – Tell me! Have you breathing before doing things?
Get comfy, let’s talk about Flexibility.
This week, we’re tackling a topic that always gets me wondering… flexibility…
I’m not just talking about being physically flexible like the Eye of the Needle pose in yoga - although that’s also part of being flexible. I’m more talking about being flexible in life. Flexible lifestyles even within what may seem like an inflexible routine.
Being flexible in life is an exercise similar to managing expectations - which if we’re being honest, will make a whole different article on. What I mean is the beautiful reminder Peter Tunney highlights in this amazing painting I absolutely love that sits in The Peter Tunney Experience in Wynwood.
Not only does the piece itself defy our expectations by simply separating the words in that way, the content of this sentence reminds me of something I strive to keep at the forefront of my mind: When expectations are released, room is made for surprises to come our way. Basically, going with the flow, opening up for surprises, releasing control… see where I’m going with this? All of these require flexibility!
Being flexible doesn’t mean, you’ll always need to adjust yourself, or de-prioritize your routine - absolutely not! Instead, it means that when you do need to adjust, it wont be a heavy lift! Mentally, emotionally, physically or even spiritually, being flexible has a lot to do with a lifestyle and mindset we choose to adopt! (Ha! remember last week?)
Tip 1: Let’s get physical - Stretch your body!
The more you work on your flexibility, the more you’re telling your body how far it can go. Working on your flexibility is actively believing that you can go the distance, that you have permission to stretch beyond your limits and reach new heights! Yes, like Hercules, you can go from zero-to-hero (I guess you all now know my favorite Disney movie).
Incorporating physical stretches into your routine will really help materialize this evolution. So, grab your phone or computer and just look at some “Stretches for beginners”, “morning stretch routine” or even apps that can help you through! The important thing is to get those joints all gelled up and lubricated so you’re not starting (or ending) your day a stiff little queen.
Tip 2: Know when and on what you SHOULD be flexible.
One of the biggest challenged in adulthood is getting our priorities straight and making sure we stick to a routine, a plan, a goal etc. If you find it hard to discern between making concessions and being flexible, my tip is to be very clear on your priorities. Knowing off the top of your head what your priorities are, preferably ranking them too, you will have a much easier time being flexible without feeling like you’re putting your priorities in second place. This will be especially important to maintain peace of mind, clarity and enjoy the flexibility of the moment!
Tip 3: Be more Bamboo!
This is actually something my therapist brought to my attention and I think it perfectly depicts what I’m talking about here. The Bamboo tree is the most flexible tree of all. The reason for that? Its roots are extremely deep and broad allowing them to bend but never break.
Making sure your priorities, your reasons and your limits are well rooted in your life, will allow you to bend, but never break. Take a large oak tree for example, as large and hefty as its branches are, they can break in a storm. Why? Because their roots don’t run as deeply as a bamboo root. Bamboo trees don’t break during the storm, they move with the wind and rely on their roots to hold them up until the storm passes. If you’re firmly rooted in your values, beliefs, and priorities, adapting when flexibility comes knocking will not break you - it can’t. You won’t lose your balance as easy either! Remember: a Bamboo tree can take up to 5 years to START growing, so this is not a process you’ll flip the switch on, however, if you start, you’ll slowly get your way there!

I hope these tips help you use flexibility as a tool to manage stress, and better your own atmosphere!
As always, here to help, so keep me posted on any thoughts that come your way!
